There are many benefits to becoming a teacher/lecturer in FE. Here are just a few:
FE can offer an enjoyable sector to work in as (generally speaking), FE students are more engaged in their studies because they have elected to be there and so have a genuine interest in your subject.
Working within FE can mean that you can work with a range of students as anyone aged 16 or over can study in FE.
FE can offer an attractive work life balance. Although your workload is likely to be demanding, FE teachers can choose between working full-time, part-time, evening or even on a casual hourly basis.
Package benefits will vary from college to college, but generally speaking, you can expect the following:
- Salary of up to circa £40,000 (dependent on location, qualifications and experience)
- Excellent holiday allowance (Some colleges offer in excess of 60 paid days leave)
- Access to the Teacher Pension (www.teacherspensions.co.uk)
- Teacher Training
- Ongoing Training & Development
- Excellent Job Progression
- Subsidised use of on-site gyms, nurseries, restaurants, hair & beauty facilities, sport facilities and much more”
The list of subjects taught within FE is almost endless. People study traditional academic subjects such as Maths, English and Science, but also vocational subjects such as Construction, Beauty, Business, Health and Social Care to name just a few. If you’ve been working within your vocational profession for several years, you could complete a teaching qualification and teach the next generation in your profession.
To teach a non-vocational subject, you’ll need an undergraduate degree in the subject you’d like to teach, along with one of the following qualifications.
If you are a qualified secondary teacher with NQT status, you can easily transfer into FE teaching with the qualifications you have.
