Helping students transition from secondary to further education

Moving from secondary to further education can be a daunting experience for students. Many will be moving from the comfort of friendship groups at their previous school into college, taking their first steps in becoming independent young adults, which can be an exciting and anxious time. But you can do a few simple things to help your new students ease into their FE experience. Here are three ways to help new students feel more at ease in their first week.

Name tags

Having name tags for students and teachers in the first week of term is an easy way to alleviate any worries of not knowing or forgetting names in the first week.

Offer one-to-one catch-ups

Catching up with your new students on a one-to-one basis is an excellent way to build rapport and get to know them and what they want to get out of the course.

Use ice-breaker activities

Ice-breaker activities are a great way to dispel any tension in the room and give students a chance to interact with each other and you. Click here for some ice-breaker activity ideas.
