UK Plumbers are discovering that teaching apprenticeships is a fresh yet familiar way to progress your career!
Why are Plumbers eager to work in education?
94% of plumbers think their long hours have had a negative impact on their family and social life. (Watersafe.org)
Unlike full-time employment, many trades are required to work “until the job is done”, which can involve unsocial hours and unexpected overtime.
According to the aforementioned study by Watersafe.org, “Just over 2/3 of plumbers felt they couldn't turn down a job even if it was outside their normal working hours.”
This is where experienced plumbers can find satisfaction in transitioning into a teaching role. Working as a lecturer or on-site trainer, you can maintain your love for the tools and keep close to the worksite, whilst softening your work-life balance.
Education roles offer more than just a change of pace, they provide a stable workflow through consistent and scheduled hours. This can be a welcome change for tradespeople who want to move away from chasing shifts or relying on themselves to find work.
Education offers its own wealth of career progression, along with the chance to gain valuable teaching and assessor qualifications. If you're seeking a role that allows you to develop professionally while maintaining consistent hours, lecturing could be the perfect fit.
Here at Boston Rose, we have consultants specialising in construction trades that help bring plumbers into the education sector to assist with the ever-increasing demand for Tradespeople. Enabling you to show your talent to high-quality education providers.
While adjusting may have its challenges, you can depend on our support throughout your journey, from tailoring your CV to helping you get settled in your new role.
We feel the best way to understand our candidate’s needs is through building a solid business relationship. To find out more we spoke with a successful candidate about his experience transitioning into an education role.
Gary, a plumbing lecturer with three years of industry experience under his tool belt, made the switch to lecturing. Hear about his experience in his own words.
Why did you choose to leave the Plumbing industry:
“I was on the lookout as there was lots of work available to me as a plumber, but I hadn’t considered education until Boston Rose called me.”
What attracted you to lecturing:
“The steady working hours (no shift work) and the future opportunities that could come with it (such as qualifications, promotions etc) were appealing to me.”
Unexpected benefits/attractions to education:
“The amount of upskilling that I’ve been offered, currently being put through my teaching and assessor qualifications as well as a number of industry qualifications that I didn’t originally possess.”
