The UK needs skilled Electricians to prepare and encourage future Tradespeople; it is the key towards meeting rising workforce demand!

Why are Electricians eager to work in education?

49% of UK Electricians experienced a workforce shortage; unfortunately, this may continue to be a concern for the coming years unless more people are trained in Electrical Installations.

In a recent report by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the Electrical Installation trade is projected to lose 3,280 skilled workers between 2023 and 2024.

This is where experienced Electricians come in to provide on-site knowledge and a passion for your trade to new learners.

Roles in education have a lot to offer, from reliable hours to an impressive teacher pension, there are many perks to changing profession. Have you considered exploring the benefits of a lecturing lifestyle? Whether you want new challenges or aim for an increased work-life balance, your transition into educating can be important for you and aspiring electrical learners.

As Boston Rose has been bringing industry candidates into education for almost 20 years, we wanted to speak to a placement of ours to get their account of their career transition.

We spoke with Rob, an Industrial Electrician with ten years of industry experience under his belt, who made the switch to lecturing with help from our specialist consultant Kai.

Hear about his experience in his words:

Why did you choose to leave the electrician industry:

“I wasn't necessarily looking to leave working in industry, but the opportunity really excited me. I knew that I wanted to try something new, and this meant all the skills I’d learned in the trade would be put to good use.”

What attracted you to lecturing:

“I loved training apprentices when I worked in industry, so naturally, it made sense. It was a new challenge. I was eager to try something new, but most of all, I was looking for something that would give me a better work-life balance so I can spend more time with my young family.”

Unexpected benefits/attractions to education:

“The pension is a huge bonus! Didn't realise how good it was until I joined the college I work for. CPD is also amazing in the education sector, you’re always learning something. I will be put through my assessor award and IQA soon and will then move on to my Cert Ed/Level 5 teaching qualification. Also, the team I work with is a huge part of why I love the sector, they’re a good group of people that truly care.”

Why did you choose to work with Boston Rose?

“Boston Rose was very supportive. I was going in blind with no understanding of what to expect from the education sector, and Kai gave me all the insight I could have possibly hoped for.”
