Teaching – do you have what it takes?

If you like the idea of inspiring a whole new generation to flourish and thrive, then a career in teaching could be for you! Whether you’re changing career paths or your training is almost complete, there are a number of key skills you’ll need in order to succeed as a teacher.

Effective Communication

Communication is key, no matter which sector of teaching you’d like to go into. Whether it’s engaging with your pupils, colleagues, or parents, knowing how to communicate effectively is a trait that teachers must possess. Here’s just a few benefits of effective communication:

·         Improving productivity in the classroom

·         Increasing engagement

·         Creating better relationships with students, colleagues and parents

Creative Problem Solving

If you consider yourself a creative type who can always find a new way of doing things, becoming a teacher may be the perfect route for you. This type of thinking will make for a more interesting classroom experience, one that engages pupils with different learning styles. Think about using music, nature, or movement in your lessons.

Strong Organisational Skills

When it comes to lesson planning and marking, it’s crucial that you have good organisational skills.  Getting yourself into a routine and keeping on top of your workload will help you stay in control, ensure your students get the most out of your lessons and give you the work-life balance you need. There are numerous benefits from being organised, including:

·         Setting a good example for your pupils

·         Achieving more in less time

·         Reducing your stress levels

Enthusiasm and Confidence

As a teacher, your enthusiasm and optimism can be infectious. If you’re passionate about the subject you teach, you’ll be able to engage your students more easily. From the moment you walk into the classroom, how you present yourself can set the scene for the lesson ahead. Being confident is powerful and you should quickly see your students following your lead. We all know that standing up and directing a class can be a daunting prospect, but having the confidence to speak out loud is a must.

Now’s the time to evaluate your qualities – what can you bring to the classroom?
